HOW DEAD SCENT ClO₂ WORKS
Our Chlorine Dioxide (ClO₂) process is the most sophisticated, safest and selective scent remover due to its unique chemical structure and patented delivery system.
WHAT IS ClO₂?
ClO₂, or chlorine dioxide, is a powerful chemical compound that is used in a variety of applications. Chlorine dioxide is a gas which is made of two oxygen atoms and a chlorine atom. It is yellow-green in colour, and has a clean odour that smells a little like a swimming pool. It’s important to note that even though chlorine is in the name, ClO₂ comes with none of the harmful by-products of bleach. In fact, even though it has powerful oxidizing properties that will halt odour particles in their tracks, ClO₂ is a naturally dissipating solution that breaks down into salt water.
THE SCIENCE BEHIND ClO₂ AND ODOuR CONTROL
ClO₂ eliminates odours via a process called oxidation. More accurately, ClO₂ works in a chemical reaction that involves the transfer of electrons between molecules and/or atoms. To illustrate, think about what rotting vegetables smells like – that odour is generally known as a mercaptan. ClO₂ steals electrons from the mercaptan molecule. Actually, altering the structure of the molecule so that it no longer smells. It does the same thing for other odours.
ClO₂ is SMALL! Why does that matter? Small odour molecules, like smoke from natural materials (roughly 0.1 micron) can easily embed into surfaces making their removal very difficult. ClO₂ is 100x smaller than a smoke molecule. Another way of saying this, is that 80-100 ClO₂ molecules could fit in one smoke molecule! This makes ClO₂ the perfect option to oxidise the smoke smell, leaving an environment free of bad odours.
The gas-form of ClO₂ reaches into hidden nooks and hard-to-reach areas (such as crawl spaces and attics) to eliminate unseen odour-causing elements. Dead Scent is engineered to capitalise on this strength, making it the most effective scent eliminator in the industry.
CHLORINE DIOXIDE AS AN OXIDIsER
As an oxidiser, chlorine dioxide is very selective. It has this ability due to distinctive one-electron exchange mechanisms. Chlorine dioxide attacks the electron-rich centers of organic molecules. One electron is transferred and chlorine dioxide is reduced to chlorite (ClO−; 2). This is where the refined sodium smell comes from.
Why choose chlorine dioxide?
- Registered and recognised by the EPA as an approved deodoriser and disinfectant
- Naturally breaks down into salt and water
- Environmentally friendly
- Safe-to-use on hard surfaces and colorfast fabrics
- Improves indoor air quality by eliminating airborne pathogens like mould spores and pollen
- Complete odour removal treatments in 4-6 hours (Dead Scent - Exclusive 1hr treatment for clothing and gear)
- Chlorine dioxide gas particles are two times smaller than other odour eliminating processes like ozone particles, meaning they can penetrate further to eliminate odour at the source
OZONE VS. CHLORINE DIOXIDE FOR ODOuR REMOVAL
When odour particles come into contact with our olfactory receptors, a chemical reaction takes place to alert our brains to the smell. Some odour control efforts only mask these particles beneath other scents, which is ineffective in the long run. Ozone and chlorine dioxide both attack smells at their source by stealing electrons from odour particles in a process called oxidation. Oxidation chemically alters each odour particle so that it doesn’t trigger your olfactory receptors.
Although both treatments work by changing the chemistry of odour particles through oxidation, their similarities end there. Some odour control companies rely on ozone to eliminate odour-causing compounds. Human body odour is one of the biggest offenders.
At Dead Scent we use chlorine dioxide for several reasons. Chlorine dioxide is more effective, works faster, and is far less harmful to humans, the environment, and your equipment and spaces. Here’s why:
What Is Ozone?
Ozone is an invisible gas. The oxygen in the air we breathe is made up of two oxygen atoms bonded together; ozone is made up of three. In high concentrations, ozone gas is very toxic to humans. This small difference actually makes a huge difference. Here’s some ozone facts to explain why-
Ozone gas is:
- A known carcinogen
- Extremely caustic (corrosive to organic material)
- Damaging to surfaces and materials if left to sit for long enough
- Considered to be harmful to both public health and the environment
- Ozone is considered to be so toxic to humans and the environment, it’s actually illegal to ship ozone generating machines into some areas of the US, for example.
IN SUMMARY:
Chlorine dioxide is far safer, more pleasant, and more effective. This is why we here at Dead Scent use ClO₂ to offer the most effect scent elimination system on the market.
